Morrison Dental Associates has achieved a prestigious accreditation from the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (AADSM), an achievement that is the culmination of two years of case studies and evaluation spearheaded by Dr. Joseph Brown, DMD.
Morrison Dental is the first dental practice in South Georgia to achieve AADSM accreditation and only the fourth dental practice in the state of Georgia to achieve the accrediation. Established in 1991, the AADSM is the only non-profit national professional society dedicated exclusively to the practice of dental sleep medicine. The AADSM is the leading national organization for dental practices like Morrison Dental Associates that use Oral Appliance Therapy to manage sleep-disordered breathing such as snoring and obstructive sleep apne.
AADSM Dental Sleep Medicine Facility Accreditation is a voluntary process created to recognize competency and delivery of optimal care to sleep-disordered breathing patients. By achieving AADSM accreditation, a facility indicates to patients, medical professionals and reimbursement decision-makers that it meets the high standards necessary to provide quality patient care.
“Being approved for AADSM accreditation separates Morrison Dental Associates from every other dental practice in the area by demonstrating an emphasis on elevating the standard of care for patients with breathing sleep disorders such as sleep apnea,” said Brown, who has practiced with Morrison Dental for eight years and attended hours of continuing education to lead Morrison Dental’s accreditation efforts. “We appreciate the importance of working with medical doctors to properly and comprehensively treat sleep apnea. It’s a dangerous disease, and Morrison Dental has been able to successfully treat hundreds of patients through Oral Appliance Therapy.”
Morrison Dental Associates launched The Dental Sleep Center of Savannah in 2011 at Morrison Dental office on Abercorn Street, and the practice works directly with area pulmonologists and sleep physicians to treat sleep disorder patients with mild to moderate sleep apnea. Morrison Dental has embraced sleep dentistry for more than 25 years, and Morrison Dental’s Dr. Harold A. Black was one of the co-founders of the AADSM.
The AADSM Dental Sleep Medicine Facility Accreditation solidifies dental sleep medicine professionals as instrumental to the sleep medicine team and helps facilities build strong medical partnerships. Dental sleep medicine facilities that seek to earn accreditation through the AADSM must comply with the Standards for Accreditation of Dental Sleep Medicine Facilities that ensure that the accredited facility demonstrates proficiency and professionalism in the practic
e of dental sleep medicine.
It’s estimated that approximately 20 percent of U.S. adults suffer from some form of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) but only about 10 percent of those who have the disease are ever diagnosed. OSA is a serious medical condition characterized by brief interruptions of breathing during sleep and has been linked to life-threatening issues like strokes, heart attacks, diabetes and hypertension. The Dental Sleep Center of Savannah is dedicated to educating the community, helping to identify OSA patients and providing treatment for mild to moderate sleep apnea through Oral Appliance Therapy.
